First Solar’s power-plant building boom

Thin is in when it comes to solar power plants.

First Solar, the Walton family-backed (WMT) maker of thin-film photovoltaic modules, on Thursday announced its second solar power plant. The latest project is a 10-megawatt photovoltaic power station to be built for Sempra Generation (SRE) in Nevada. Two weeks ago, California regulators approved a 7.5-megawatt - expandable to 21 megawatts - First Solar (FSLR) power plant to be constructed in the Mojave to generate electricity for utility Southern California Edison (EIX). Thin-film solar technology layers solar cells on plates of glass or flexible materials, a process that lowers production costs with the trade-off being lower efficiency at converting sunlight into electricity.

438,000

Yes, that's right . . . that's the number of jobs lost in the US in the first half of 2008. Stock markets, flirting with a bear market, finished another losing week. Oil pushed to a record high. Inflation and foreclosures are up, consumer confidence is down . . . can we say recession?

Check out this video from The Washington Post's Dana Milbank of The assistant Treasury secretary for economic policy, Phillip Swagel.

Check out Milbank's full story . . . it's very good Sunday reading. :-)

Good Riddance - Jesse Helms is dead

One of the most hateful, homophobic, racist men in American politics is dead:
Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, a North Carolina Republican who became an icon to conservatives, died Friday at the age of 86, a senior congressional source told CNN.
No loveloss here . . . my feeling are not hurt in the least that this man is dead! Mr. Helms, I'm sure I'll be joining you in hell, but for quite different reasons. At any rate, please feel free to use the suite I've reserved in hell! :-)

If you're not familiar with Jesse Helms, check out this great roundup provided by AmericaBlog.com
